A transparent screening tool for identifying Tesla hardware before you buy.

Our Mission

As a former Tesla employee and longtime Tesla owner, I created HW4Checker to solve a simple but critical problem: helping Tesla buyers identify whether a vehicle has Hardware 3 or Hardware 4 before making a purchase decision.

With Tesla's rapid iteration and mid-cycle hardware updates, it can be difficult to know what you're getting, especially in the used market. Our mission is to provide transparency and empower buyers with clear, easy-to-use screening tools.

Why It Matters

Hardware 4 is Tesla's newer driver-assistance computer and camera platform. It provides additional processing capacity and a newer camera suite, but exact capabilities and software availability vary by vehicle, configuration, market, and installed software.

Unfortunately, third-party listings do not always state which hardware version a vehicle has. That's where we come in.

How We Do It

Our VIN checker applies transparent validation rules and reported production-transition estimates for supported US Tesla VINs. It is a screening tool, not a vehicle-specific database. We publish the limitations clearly and direct buyers to confirm the result in the vehicle before relying on it. See the FAQ for common hardware questions.
