How to Identify Tesla HW4 Cameras

Knowing whether a Tesla Model Y, Model 3, or Model X has Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) matters when you're comparing vehicles or weighing FSD capability. A VIN can provide a useful estimate, but the vehicle's Additional Vehicle Information screen is the most reliable vehicle-specific check.

Our tool validates supported US Tesla VINs and analyzes reported model-year, factory, and production-sequence transition patterns. Results are estimates because Tesla's hardware transitions were gradual and can overlap within a model year.

HW3 vs. HW4: Why It Matters for FSD v14

HW3 vs HW4 differences matter because Hardware 4 is Tesla's newer driver-assistance computer and camera platform. It adds processing headroom and a newer camera suite, but feature availability still depends on vehicle configuration, market, and installed software.

Camera Resolution:HW4 uses a newer, higher-resolution camera suite that provides more visual detail than the earlier HW3 cameras.
Processing Power:HW4 provides additional processing capacity for newer Tesla vision models. Tesla does not publish complete consumer specifications, so exact figures vary by source.
Red Tinted Lenses:A red reflection in the front or side camera lenses is a common HW4 clue. Lighting can change its appearance, so use the software screen for confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade my HW3 Tesla to HW4?

Tesla has not announced a retrofit program from HW3 to HW4 for existing owners. Rather than assuming an upgrade will become available, ask Tesla about the specific vehicle.

Does HW4 affect vehicle range?

Hardware version alone tells you little about range. Battery, wheels, tires, model year, temperature, and driving conditions are far more useful factors when comparing vehicles.

Will HW3 vehicles receive FSD updates?

HW3 Model 3 and Model Y now receive the v14 Lite branch (wide release since July 2026). It brings selected v14 behavior and features to HW3, but it is distinct from the full v14 branch available on HW4 and still requires active driver supervision. See the FSD updates for source-linked rollout context.
